Guillaume Nicolas and Julien Choppin, both teachers atENSA Normandie, reveal their report entitled "Ringardiser la performance, construire la robustesse" (Making performance obsolete, building robustness) in the February/March issue of D'Architectures magazine. *
At the heart of this dossier is the book by plant biology researcher Olivier Hamant (2023): "Antidote au culte de la performance: la robustesse du vivant" (Antidote to the cult of performance: the robustness of living organisms).** Based on his observations of living organisms, he develops the idea that, in a world increasingly subject to fluctuations, notably climate change and socio-economic upheaval, it is preferable to rely on the notion of robustness rather than performance.
They propose to question the world of architecture on these two notions: Antoine Picon reflects on the evolution of technology through the ages; an essay by Ariel Genadt defends weakness and vulnerability, taking Japanese architecture as an example; Pascale Joffroy tackles the political aspect and Cyril Pressacco the material aspect, with experimental research into lime-hemp insulation. The dossier, which opened with an interview with Olivier Hamant, closes with an interview with Gilles Perraudin.
