Lifestyles and ways of living are part of a long period of time, a long anthropological period of time, and their evolution is slow, even if we can think that it has accelerated in recent decades.
But collective housing for the majority is a 20th century invention. It has determined both the features of the dwellings themselves, their comfort, and their modes of grouping, which spatially inscribe the idea that one has of a community.

Today, the urban or metropolitan way of life has become dominant:
How can we appreciate the changes that are taking place and understand the current forms of housing, knowing that collective housing remains a priori the most ecologically responsible?
These questions will be at the heart of the "HABITER" conference.

Jacques Lucan is an architect and historian, honorary professor at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne and the Écoles nationales supérieures d'architecture. He recently published "Habiter - Ville et architecture", EPFL Press, Lausanne.
