Lecture - Yielding architecture and resilience in Japan since 1945 by Ariel Genadt

The representation of stability has long been considered key to architecture's cultural role. In recent years, however, our environment has become ever less stable, and clashes between buildings and natural forces have become frequent. Since Japan has known such clashes through the ages, its architects have demonstrated architectural expressions of both toughness and weakness. In parallel, the nation has displayed a remarkable economic, social, and cultural resilience. Is there a correlation between those expressions of weakness in public buildings and Japan's resilience?
