1 : 2MASTER CYCLE
Semester 7
Architecture Workshop and project theory
S07-TRA-1-2: Theory of Architecture
Objectives
The TRANSFORM Program of Study has the following specific educational objectives:
- Training in the identification and terminology of historic buildings: from urban morphology to the details of interior finishing.
- An introduction to the complexity and variety of topics in rehabilitation
- an understanding of current environmental issues (historical perspectives, critical analysis, and future scenarios)
- the ability to conduct a comprehensive assessment of an existing building
- a critical understanding of the various challenges involved in the conservation, restoration, repair, and transformation of an existing building
- the ability to utilize, analyze, and apply traditional construction skills and techniques within the context of an architectural project

Content
Content:
The course will alternate between classroom lectures and on-site observations:
The content of the 1.5-hour classes includes:
- a presentation of various examples of preliminary studies and site condition assessments, their content, and the necessary steps in the analysis:
- a presentation of a survey and observation method
- Identification and classification of pathologies
- Prioritization of pathologies, identification of risks
- Survey through mapping and definition of the legend
- Presentation of interventions (preventive, temporary, and permanent measures) through case studies
Each lecture includes illustrations to demonstrate examples of different pathologies or restoration projects.
A building exhibiting a range of pathologies will provide a concrete setting for on-site observation and analysis (building in Rouen to be determined):
- Practice in identifying pathologies; initial approach to analyzing the building (in groups)
- Site visit and survey practice; creation of a legend (independent work)

Evaluation method
Assessment Method
- Class participation; attendance and consistency
- Submission of an on-site survey of structural defects and a written report of observations in a bound A4 format.
- Final exam
Assessment is based on a sketchbook containing on-site observational sketches and analyses of structural pathologies, as well as an analytical essay on the overall understanding of the building’s behavior and potential intervention strategies.
The grade will consist of
- A score out of 10 for the quality of the observations and surveys from the preliminary study, as well as the care taken in the survey/sketchbook and the summary report.
- A score out of 10 for the student’s ability to synthesize information and demonstrate precision (in writing and drawing)
- This grade will be weighted based on unexcused absences from class.
