S05-AR-3-2 : Anatomy of the envelope

Responsible for : Laurent Mouly
Laurent Mouly
Objectives
Having acquired a basic understanding of the behavior of materials during the previous semesters, this teaching unit enables students to develop the notion of materiality through the structure (stability) and the components of the envelope (interface between the project and its environment). The aim is to stimulate constructive and environmental reasoning so that it can be integrated into the project design process.
Theoretical courses address envelope issues in terms of mechanical strength and stability, as well as aspects relating to energy savings and the thermal and aeraulic behavior of buildings, taking into account regulatory aspects. TDs involve analyzing the envelopes of exemplary buildings, both traditional (vernacular architecture) and innovative (high-tech), using experimentation and simulation.
Content
lectures -> whole class
Introductory lecture: presentation of building envelopes, providing a concrete approach to design based on the following themes: envelope and mechanical strength and stability - envelope and materiality - envelope and ventilation - envelope and safety of use - envelope and protection against noise - thermal behavior of the envelope and energy saving.
Illustrations of exemplary systems, both traditional (cf. vernacular architecture) and innovative (cf. high technology).

TD
Through the study of an exemplary building, representation of the anatomy of its envelope. Analysis and commentary based on themes developed in lectures.
Evaluation method
Course materials
TD assignments due at the end of the semester: oral presentation and pdf file.
Work required
Representation of the anatomy of the envelope of the chosen building using models (1/10th and 1/20th sections) + analysis files in paper and computer format (with details worked out in computerized practical work) enabling us to appreciate all the materials used, their functions and their methods of implementation.
Analysis of the systems implemented to manage thermal operating strategies in relation to the use of the building and the program, through experimentation.

S05-AR-3-3 : Architecture professions / Internship report

Objectives
Objectives common to semesters 5, 6, 7 and 8

The lectures on the profession of architect are organized in 5 thematic sessions spread over semesters 5, 6, 7 and 8. The objective of this progressive teaching is to draw up a picture of the profession and its framework of exercise which allows to better apprehend the current stakes of the profession, the role and the place of the architect in this renewed context: multiplication of the partners of the project management, segmentation and diversification of the profession, questioning of the place and the role of the architect in the system of the actors of the act of building, evolution of the legislative and contractual framework, evolution of the public action towards a delegation of the urban development to the large private groups of the building and public works...
- Semester 5 : The general framework of the profession
- Semester 6 : The diversity of the modes of exercise
- Semester 7 : The world of architectural agencies
- Semester 7 : The legal environment of the architect
- Semester 8: Agency and Project Management
Content
