S06-AR-1-2 : Critique(s) of contemporary architecture
Responsible for : Valéry Didelon
Objectives
The aim of this course is to enrich students' knowledge of contemporary architecture, and to develop their ability to take a critical look at the design, construction and reception of contemporary buildings. Ultimately, the knowledge and skills acquired in this course contribute to their aptitude for architectural creation as practiced in project workshops.
The course focuses on buildings constructed in Europe from the beginning of the 21st century to the present day. Each lesson is an opportunity to describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate these buildings in terms of the intentions of their designers and the other players involved, the economic and technical resources mobilized, the historical circumstances of their construction, and the way in which these buildings have ultimately been received and used by the public and users.
Based on concrete case studies, the aim is to question the ideas and practices specific to the discipline, but also to understand the other logics on which architecture depends: the mediatization of major projects, the neoliberalization of the urban fabric, the rise of digital technologies and the injunction to innovate, the reuse of existing buildings and heritage, the economy of both financial and material resources, the democratization of decision-making processes, the greening of construction processes and systems, the feminization of the architectural profession, the renewed interest in countryside planning, etc.
